We ended our involvement in F1 in Schools as a competing team at the end of Year 12, as we wanted to focus on achieving good A-Level results. In our time as a competing team, we won a website award, acquired a trophy for Fastest Car and won our Regional Final. We truly believe that we could have taken the team’s achievement to another level, but we chose to focus on our studies.

I am pleased to say that the team have gone on to do well in our chosen pathways. I, Harry, am studying Medicine at Newcastle; Matt has gone on to study an engineering pre-course at Derby University; and Louis has entered full-time work.

Team MOD win Regional Final!

On the 23rd November Team MOD woke early in the morning and drove to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. The event? The Central England Regional Final!

We set up our large stand in the central hall of the Arena, along with over a dozen teams of all age groups. Our massive display boards made for an impressive, bedecked as they were with laminated pages from our portfolio and pictures of the team. The stand really accentuated our team’s graphic identity and served as a display pen for our previous seasons’ cars and our portfolio.

Our portfolio was judged late in the morning. Mick Gibson from Jaguar (and colleagues) were very impressed with the record of our design process. Their obvious approval really buoyed the teams’ confidence!

Fresh from our first hurdle, we were feeling optimistic. Soon after, we performed our verbal presentation to a pair f judges from Jaguar. We carried this off well and, with all the nail-biting events over, we waited patiently for our race.

Thanks to Louis’ brilliant reaction times, the car performed well. The car’s race speed was fairly impressive (about 1.35 secs average) but we knew we would have to bump this up.

After we had completed our missions for the day we were quietly confident (well maybe a little bit cocky ). We were bang on the money however, as we scooped the 1st place award for our age group (16+). We were jubilant: all our hard work had been richly rewarded!

Now all we had to do was raise our game for the National Finals…

School Open Evenings. 25th/26th September 07

Team MOD took part in a fund raising scheme to try and recuperate our finances. The first evening was an unfortinate let down, but after re-aranging the location, the second night was an improvement. The nights only raised little over £30, which was a huge drop from the previous year where we raised much over £100. However, we can now work on ways of improving our attractivness. A tombola for example may encourage more guests.

On the bright side, we spread awareness of the competiton to some parents, with hope that there maybe a few more teams in the upcoming years. Ofcourse, Team MOD are always on hand to help.

Team MOD win fastest car award

Look at the picture above. Could you believe that this car is capable of covering a straight distance of 20 metres in 1.321 seconds?

On Wednesday Team MOD attended the Central England Regional Final for the second year running and stole the most precious silverware from the winner’s table. Our car ‘Green Goddess’ was designed and manufactured by Harry and Matt and thrashed the opposition to walk away with the award for the Fastest R-Type Car.

Its combination of aluminium and plastic wheels gave the car an aggressive stance. Sitting on the start line it looked like it wanted to kill the opposition. The other cars were left looking apologetic. It just proves that looks are everything.

The Signal Green ‘Goddess’ charged the track like a gazelle and danced all the way home. The time exceeded all our wildest dreams and we hope that with further development we can break the world record of 1.083 seconds next year. For a car 15 grams heavier than the minimum weight (lighter cars are faster) it was laser fast.

Needless to say Uncle Harry is very proud of his baby and will be considering the job offers at Ferrari very seriously.
